By the Honorable Sally J. Lieber,
Speaker pro Tempore of the California State Assembly; Relative to commending
Mesa de la Comunidad
Whereas,
On November 30, 2006, the Mountain View Chamber of Commerce hosts its annual Celebration of Leaders Awards Evening to honor businesses and organizations who have contributed to the vitality of the city; and
Whereas, Mesa de la Comunidad is being recognized by the Mountain View business community as Outstanding Organization of the Year, and it is appropriate at this time that attention be drawn to the notable accomplishments of this group of committed residents; and
Whereas, Mesa de la Comunidad formed less than two years ago, in February 2005, to bring together residents who were concerned about a proposal to close Castro Elementary School, a neighborhood school that provides critical services to predominantly non-English-speaking students and their families; and
Whereas, Mesa de la Comunidad provided a needed voice for an under-represented community and harnessed grass roots sentiment to produce overwhelming turnout at events, meetings, and an all-night vigil ultimately saving Castro Elementary School from closure; and
Whereas, The founders and members of Mesa de la Comunidad took note of a pressing need for an organization to serve as an advocate and a bridge for under-represented groups in Mountain View, particularly the Latino community; and
Whereas, Mesa de la Comunidad followed its initial success with a series of community events and services, including a children’s community-wide track meet, a community soccer tournament, K-12 ballroom dance classes and afterschool programs for children in Mountain View schools; and
Whereas, Mesa de la Comunidad has pioneered a new era of collaboration and outreach between Mountain View’s Latino community and city departments, school districts, educational foundations, the Mountain View Voice, Kaiser Permanente, YMCA, and the Palo Alto Red Cross; and
Whereas, Mesa de la Comunidad is a young organization yet its impact has been deep and far-reaching in Mountain View, and it is deserving of the accolades it has received;
Now, therefore, be it
Resolved by Speaker pro Tempore of the California State Assembly Sally J. Lieber,
